Should You Engrave Your Wedding Ring? A NZ Men's Guide
Your wedding ring is one of the most personal things you'll ever wear. So it makes sense that many NZ grooms want to take it one step further — with an engraving that makes it truly theirs.
But before you commit, there are a few things worth knowing. Here's everything you need to consider about engraving your men's wedding ring.
What Is Ring Engraving?
Engraving is the process of etching text, symbols, or a design onto the inside (or outside) of a ring. Most wedding ring engravings are placed on the inner band — hidden from view but close to you every day.
Common choices include:
- Wedding date (e.g. 14.02.26)
- Partner's initials or name
- A short phrase or vow ("always", "forever yours")
- GPS coordinates of where you met or got married
- A meaningful symbol or small design
Which Metals Can Be Engraved?
Not all metals are created equal when it comes to engraving. Here's how the most popular men's ring materials stack up:
Titanium ✅
Titanium engraves beautifully. It's one of the best metals for laser engraving — the contrast is clean and the result is sharp and long-lasting.
Tungsten ✅
Tungsten can be laser engraved, though its extreme hardness means traditional hand engraving isn't possible. Laser engraving on tungsten produces excellent results with great durability.
Tisten ✅
Tisten (a titanium-tungsten alloy) also engraves well via laser. You get the best of both worlds — the strength of tungsten with the engraveability of titanium.

Rings with inlays require more care. Engraving is typically done on the metal band itself rather than the inlay. Always check with your jeweller before proceeding.
Laser vs Traditional Engraving
Most modern ring engraving is done by laser, which offers:
- Greater precision for small text and fine detail
- Consistent depth across hard metals like tungsten
- Faster turnaround times
Traditional hand engraving is still available for softer metals and offers a more artisan feel — but it's less common for the alternative metals popular in NZ men's rings.
How Much Text Can You Fit?
This depends on the width and diameter of your ring. As a general guide:
- 6mm ring: fits roughly 15–20 characters comfortably
- 8mm ring: fits roughly 20–25 characters
Keep it short and meaningful. Less is more when it comes to engraving.
Plan Ahead — Allow Time for Engraving
If you're ordering for a wedding, don't leave engraving to the last minute. Allow at least 2–3 weeks from order to delivery when engraving is involved, especially around peak wedding season (October–March in NZ).
